  1. Big test coming up this week for Adell. After facing Matz tomorrow, he’s got Manoah, Berrios, Greinke, Garcia, and McCullers. I’ve liked what I’ve seen out of him thus far and think he could be a top 30 outfielder the rest of the way if he can hold his own against these guys.

On the IL with shoulder fatigue, but is expected to miss only one start, so we could see him back in the rotation after his 10 days is up,  Any reason not to believe this?

I haven’t seen any recent updates. He’s a fairly risky start this week given the uncertainty so I’ll be checking my benches to find a replacement.

Oh boy, surely this time will be different and I can invest in the Cincinnati bullpen without it blowing up in my face.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times, shame on David Bell?

Oh well, I have a somewhat optimistic feeling about Lorenzen and may be rolling him out in weekly leagues this week barring anything disastrous happening tonight or tomorrow.

  4. Still just playing catch from 90 feet. I own several shares of Bieber but I think I’m about ready to cut bait. He’s still got to progress to throwing from a mound, face live hitters, and then go on a rehab assignment which will probably require at least 3 starts. There’s only 8 weeks left in the season so best case scenario we’re looking at a couple weeks of Biebs on a pitch count.
In terms of potential outcomes this year I’d say throwing zero innings is far more likely than throwing over 20 innings. He’d be an easy hold if you have an open IL spot but in leagues without them he’s taking up a valuable bench spot. Has anyone dropped in a redraft league yet?

    From June 15 - July 31 he hit .227 Avg/.316 OBP/.328 SLG/.633 OPS, 14 R, 2 HR, 7 RBI... with a .314 BABIP... That's a bad slump.

Interestingly, he's been quite unlucky during that time period if you're inclined to place merit in expected statistics. From June 15th to the present he's got the biggest discrepancy in SLG vs xSLG (min 300 pitches) by a rather significant margin. We all know he's a streaky hitter. As long as his k rate remains stable I'm going to leave him in my lineup and wait for the next hot streak. His next 9 games (3 vs KC, 3 @ Pitt, 3 @ KC) are pretty juicy so I wouldn't be surprised if that heater happens soon.

  6. I’ve spent way too much time analyzing this Reds’ bullpen this season but here’s how I see it:

Lorenzen is the best bet going forward. He’s sitting 96-98 with his 4 seamer, throwing a hard cutter 91-93 with good movement, and he has a decent changeup that should keep lefties honest.

We all knew Hembree was likely to implode and he has 2 major flaws that’ll keep him from being a successful closer - he’s wild and he can’t get lefties out (.394 wOBA on the year).

Givens might be in the mix but we’ve all seen what happens to him in the closer role.

Sims and Antone are due back soon but they’re both coming off arm injuries and there are very real concerns about what they are without the sticky stuff.

  7. It’ll be interesting to see where he plays in the field while Mondesi completes his rehab assignment in Omaha. I’m guessing he’ll man 3rd while Mondesi plays short. I also wouldn’t be surprised if he gets the call around the same time Mondesi completes the rehab assignment so they get more experience playing next to each other.

Alvardo might have already taken his job.  Kennedy was probably getting today off regardless, but coming off two straight terrible outings and given how impressive Alvardo looked today, Kennedy's hold on the job is razor thin at best.

Alvarado, the guy with a 16:15 k:bb ratio, 8.53 ERA, and 2.54 WHIP over his last 12.2 innings? That guy? Kennedy definitely isn’t elite but he should have plenty of leash now that Suarez is in the rotation and Alvarado won’t be the one putting the pressure on him. He has no clue where the ball is going when it leaves his hand.
