Angels blow a 3 run lead. How is that Get Mike trout to the postseason plan working out for them. The player they signed to a HUGE contrect A Rodon is hurt and they are currently in last place in the division . Congratulations Front office bozos! They should have fork the money for Bauer, Darvish  and Hendrik if they wanted to be serious about playoffs.

Oh wow, didn’t realize the rangers have a better record.

Bad look for the franchise to handle it this way - they could’ve been more gracious and at least calculated in saying farewell to him.  This is a guy that they routinely feted and celebrated as he approached MLB milestones.

It makes me wonder what the heck happened behind the scenes to warrant a flat-out DFA - has to be more to it than he was upset about not getting to face a particular Rays reliever.

Might of been a growing rift and the Yarbough thing was the last straw. I remember a few years ago Pujols didn't want trout stealing second while he was batting cause it distracted him. Could be them just sick up his behind antics that we don't know about.

Walsh has played in 28 games and no one on the team has played more then 29. He was already an everyday player.

    So, cool story?

No, he was playing RF a lot to make way for Pujols. it just means he is now in his natural position everyday. so cool story indeed

This is the last year of his contract.  He is NOT playing in 2022.  Cards can sign him for $1 for September 30th game this year.  Angels have to pay the difference so no skin off Cards' nose for last game of regular season.

Oh his is but the first.   Well, Bonilla too but Pujols one sticks out like a sore thumb.  And Mets fans are already thinking about the Lindor contract going to be even worse.  As a Red Sox fan I can think of a few.  Pedroia's and that Cuban prospect that fizzled etc etc.  But Pujols one is the poster contract on what NOT to do.

Meanwhile over 300 pitches thrown in Tigers at Boston game and it is still just the top of the 8th.  9-8 Tigers right now.  Goodrum playing like an all star and poor Bobby Dalbec is now 0 for a zillion and struck out with the bases loaded.

oh man, I wish I remembered the name of that Cuban guy. That was like 4-5 years ago. People here were pretty hyped for him.

I would argue that the Cardinals management was secretly THRILLED that he didn't accept their ten year offer and left.  A deal worth 210 million with 30 million deferred represented a massive overpay for his likely production between his age 34ish-44ish seasons and the Cardinals, who have generally had a smart front office while the Angels have generally had a historically dumb front office, almost certainly knew it.

I remember at the time there were already whispers that Pujols was in decline

By releasing him (as opposed to him retiring) aren't the Angels still responsible for the rest of his contract? They're just freeing up a roster spot.

I believe they still have to pay him and then he could sign somewhere else and the other team doesn't have to pay his contract with the angels. but someone can correct me if I am wrong. I bet he signs a one day contract with the cardinals and retires that way.

IF you took Pujols numbers with the Angels the last 10 yrs He ain't a HOF player. Its amazing the diffrence in 1st ten with the Cardinals and 2nd ten with the Angels. He did not have 1 year with the Angels better then any yr he had with the Cards Not even 1.

I know, it might go down as the worst contract in mlb history.

I'm thinking the Angels told Pujols he wasn't going to play everyday and then Pujols asked for his release.

I was just reading that. I know how he wants to play, but.... how can he be in a position now to basically demand that with his crappy play.

Interesting. Pujols is a proud man. This was going to come to a head at some point. Better to get it out of the way early. Has his wife tweeted yet?

I don't know, does she have a history of tweeting outlandish things?

I'm surprised they're doing this at this time.

    Why now?

He pretty much made it clear this was his last season. It seemed they were planning this "final tour" for him.

Maddon even gave him the opening day start and sat Walsh on the bench for the 1st 2 games of the season.

I wonder if there's another shoe to drop in this?

Maybe the Angel's have a replacement in mind.

Walsh, and to make room for marsh or adell.

Kind of feel sorry for pujols going out like this, but he simply can't play anymore.

I thought about picking him up. Pitches for a good team in a pitcher's park. I looked at his underlying stats on Fangraphs though. Didn't seem that impressive. Low Swstr rate and high LD rate (not counting yesterday) was 27%! EV is 91, which seems pretty high.

FG stats have led me astray before though (like Alex Cobb). Who knows. Might be good and not just lucky. HR/FB ratio well under 10% despite high average EV. Luck or skill? Does that normalize?

34 to 5 K/B ratio damn impressive though.

Not they get everything right, but pitchers list isn’t so hot on him either. But he’s been pitching good as of late, use him until the wheels come off

Fool me once shame on you. Fool me one thousand times times shame on me. To partially borrow a line from the Talking Heads' song "Once in a Lifetime", I think Pivetta's the same as he ever was.

He wasn't that bad yesterday. Streaming him this week has so far paid off. But ROS, I don't trust him.

COVID might have gotten him hard.   As a Burnes owner this concerns me.  Supposedly these new strains cause more issues.

He had gotten his first dose of the vaccine, I know that doesn't give you immunity, but I thought it still will prevent severe symptoms. Either way, I hope he gets better.
