Rafael Soriano

gonzalez for the taking..

Braves placed RHP Rafael Soriano on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 6, with inflammation in his right elbow.

He'll probably try again in a couple of weeks, but at some point, he'll probably need to undergo exploratory surgery if he continues to feel pain. The Braves will close by committee for now. Mike Gonzalez might be ready to seize the job before the end of the month. Blaine Boyer is probably the best bet of the Braves' current relievers. "

Remember this guy? Per Yahoo!:

Jul 13 Soriano (elbow) threw a scoreless inning with a strikeout on Saturday for Atlanta's Dominican Summer League team, the team's official web site reports.

Recommendation: Soriano will make another appearance on Tuesday. He may be activated from the DL after the All-Star break if all goes well. He'll likely return initially in a set-up role.

So is he worth an All Star break pick up?

Not sure if Gonz is ready for back to back outings yet so Soriano may steal a save here and there.

Cox threw Gonz out there today perhaps as an experiment to see if he's ready. He was pretty shaky early but settled in.

Personally as someone who drafted Soriano, I don't want him back. Just get anotehr Tommy John already for god's sake. I don't want to waste a roster space on him.

He's coming off the DL tomorrow...I don't think he'll take the closing job from Mike Gonzalez.

Jul 20 Soriano threw in the bullpen without discomfort on Saturday. General manager Frank Wren said Soriano, who opened the season as the closer, is scheduled to come off the disabled list on Monday. Advice: Soriano has had discomfort in his right elbow since spring training, and has been on the disabled list twice this season. He has missed 35 games since going on the DL for the second time on June 6. He has pitched in only nine games, recording three saves with a 2.00 ERA.
