is there any reason to think Wood will be booted from the rotation?

(aka: any reason not to use a weekly acquisition on him tomorrow morning?)

Doesn't seem to be in the short run.

Once Hill and Ryu are back...he will have to have performed well but I'm a believer.

Seems like if Wood keeps pitching like he has been, he needs to stay in the rotation.  Liking this start so far.

don't jinx it, Trader Mac! haha jk. Digging it too. If he muffs the 'win' with this 8-0 lead, I'll chop off my big toe and eat it. with dijon

ultimate twist: I already ate both my big toes

(sorry folks... getting sidetracked here... all blame goes to this Space Dust IPA)

on a serious note, this is why I love FIP.

Wood's was a lovely 2.47 before tonight.... which piqued my curiosity.... combine that with the boys on the CBS pod, who raved that he "looks nasty" and I was willing to take the plunge.

The Pirates do suck, but he's pretty solid. Already had his velo come back last year, now it's up substantially from even that.

I might be the forum Pirate homer but this Pirates lineup did have a 127 wRC+ against lefties coming into today. Wood looked pretty good to me

I did, and I was gonna follow up with the fact that his numbers were bad after pitch 75, and so while your eyes in the early going might tell you that story, obviously the Dodgers are somewhat congnisent of them, because he has only gone over 75 pitches twice, and it was only for a total of 3 batters, and not that its some huge sample size, but those 3 at-bats that have gone over 75?  Batters are 1 for 2 with a walk.

Whats interesting is that while it might look different to the eye, its telling a lot of the same story.  The funky lefty is lights out first time through the order, dude has allowed first time through a batting avg of .077 with 11K and 1 walk in 27 plate appearances.  The second time through, same 27 plate appearances but now batting average is .304 and only 4K and now 4 walks.  3rd time, Dodgers have limited, only 7 plate appearances so not a big sample size, but avg against in limited time is .400.

We will see what happens, I like the guy, I was big on him last year and would be a buyer again, I just need to actually see him be able to produce the 2nd and 3rd time through the order, because his numbers to me still appear to be a guy thats more of a 1-2 inning lefty out of the pen.

Where you at son?

Wood has pitched phenomenal to date. Plus his velocity is up and his K-rate is back to his non-2014 levels. Control has been great and he's getting ground balls. And he's a lefty. Pretty much everything you want from a pitcher. He's definitely one of the Dodger's top 5 guys to me . I'd generally say the other 3 should be Hill, McCarthy, and Maeda when healthy. The when healthy part is huge with some of those guys. Ryu is next in line. Not really sure why they'd bother starting Urias now. He hasn't looked that good all year (even in AAA), plus they want to keep his innings down anyway. Having him work out of the pen and making spot starts seems to solve that issue. And if he gets it going, you save his arm for the playoffs.

Wood's game doesn't revolve around FB velocity - it's a deceptive delivery.  Had hitters off-balance all night for the second straight game.  Hard to imagine a league where you don't want him right now

Great start.  Pirates lineup probably bottom 3 in MLB though.  Just filled with horrific losers galore.

Plus they just found out one of their teammates had surgery for potential cancer, so maybe they didn't feel like putting on their winner caps today....

I felt like Ryu was about to go all 2014 before this latest DL stint too. I think the moral of the story is... between SD, SF, road Rockies and (I think, can't remember) road DBacks, just about anybody pitching for the Dodger will be useful at some point.

I wish Wood would have gone deeper into the game but I'll take 11 K's in 5 innings.

That...seems fair.

Between McCarthy, Hill, Ryu, one of them will strain their back tying their shoe before the decision comes to boot Wood. He shohld be pretty secure for short term.

Hides the ball well. As was stated, great deception. Hitters are looking for that release point, just have problems finding it.  Add that with good stuff and you have a successful pitcher. If he can stay healthy, he stays a starter, IMO....
