Jamaal Charles 2017 Season Outlook

Recommended Posts

Released today by the Chiefs, where will Charles end up next?

Chiefs released RB Jamaal Charles.

The expected move saves Kansas City $6.2 million in cap space. 30-year-old Charles struggled to get on the field in 2016 while battling injuries to both knees following a 2015 ACL tear. He has just 83 carries since the end of the 2014 season. One of the NFL's most dynamic all-purpose backs in his prime, Charles incredibly hit or topped 5.0 yards per carry in each of his first eight seasons. Some team may bring Charles to camp, but his NFL future is in serious doubt.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports free agent Jamaal Charles (knees) is currently "healthy."

This information is almost certainly coming from Charles' agent, but it's the best we have to go on. Charles tore his left ACL in 2011 and his right ACL in 2015. He had his right meniscus "trimmed" last November, then underwent a "clean-up" operation on his left knee while rehabbing the right one. The stability of Charles' knees will determine whether he has any football left.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports free agent Jamaal Charles' priority is to sign with a Super Bowl contender.

"No. 1 on his list is going to be playing for a contender," said Garafolo. "He's aiming for teams that were in the postseason and have a legitimate Super Bowl chance." Garafolo added that the Cowboys, in particular, "would be high on Jamaal Charles' list, for sure." Charles played his college ball at Texas. The Giants are another 2016 playoff team with which Charles would be a fit.

Jamaal Charles (knees) was released by the Chiefs with the "failed physical" designation.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Charles is "healthy," but his former team didn't agree. Rapoport has consistently passed along too-rosy information on Charles' recovery, so it's likely coming from Charles' agent. All that really matters is that Charles should be recovered for training camp.

Packers. Sign Charles and TMo and put them both in the backfield. Use Ripkowski as the FB goal line vulture. Adams Nelson Cobb and then Jared Cook at TE. Who would stop that offense?

Their own defense, that can't get off the field.

He's going to the Rams!! *crosses fingers and closes eyes*

Seriously though, I hope he gets better... He was one of my favorite players.

I don't think there's much middle ground here. Either he's finally healthy, and he'll be a solid PPR RB2 with every week upside (almost completely regardless of where he lands), or he's just done!

I'm with Ponza, I really hope he hasn't already reached the end. Even if the speed and quickness have diminished, his vision and pass catching will keep him relevant (and fun to watch) if his boy is able.

Word is the Eagles are interested.

The Eagles head coach (Doug Pederson) was Jamal Charles' offensive coordinator in KC.

Charles was released with a failed physical.  He's a walking corpse first, a big contract liability second, then a possible home run.  Makes it really hard to open the check book as an owner.

The Eagles will likely give him the closest examination due to his history with their head coach.

  • 1 month later...

A video posted by his agent shows free agent Jamaal Charles working through a training drill.

The video is linked below. Charles appears to be going less than full speed, but he is able to cut on both surgically repaired knees and does not seem to be wearing a brace. Agent David Mulugheta undoubtedly released this video to show Charles is healthy enough to sign, but the veteran has not heard a peep since visiting the Seahawks over a month ago. He will almost certainly have to wait until after the draft to find a new team, and his time as a free agent could drag all the way through the summer.

Sounds like a guy the Jets would sign so they could let him and matt forte steal carries from Bilal Powell.

Miami is stiiiill not convinced about Jay Ajayi, eager for negotiations

A compliment makes some sense.  Wasn't it Damian Williams last year?  Not so good

*complement.

Unless you think the Dolphins will sign Charles so he can tell Ajayi how cool his dreads look.

The Eagles would be a good fit, with a huge hole at RB and Pederson at the helm, but they're in a pretty bad place financially after all that FA spending and I don't think they can afford him.

Afford him?

Charles should be happy just to get an offer

I don't see the Packers picking him up, but if they do, watch out.

Word is they're releasing Michael.  I think Charles could be a perfect fit if he's anywhere near healthy.
