Corey Dickerson 2017 Outlook

Recommended Posts

It sounds like Dickerson will be leading off with Keirmaier batting second.  No projection sites have him doing much more than .255/22/60/70 with a low OBP.  Anyone think he out produces those numbers, especially in the runs department if he's leading off?  Where's his ceiling? 30 bombs with a .285/.345/.450 line?

I'm staying away frim Tampa OF/CI/DH guys.   Smith, Souza, Kiermaier, Rasmus, Bourjous, Dickerson all fighting for at bats. As well as Morrison and Weeks. I'm guessing Ramos will DH some too once he's back.

Yes Ramos will cut into his DH time some when working his way back for maybe a month.  But that's a temporary blip.  Long term the DH slot is pretty much exclusively Dickerson's.  He isn't fighting the other outfielders for playing time because he almost never pays in the outfield.  Though if his bat is the best of the lot he may play there some during Ramos' rehab period.  Which helps him re-qualify next year for the outfield so it is all good.

Yeah Daniel Robertson is absolute garbage who is unlikely to Slug over. 350.   If he's going to platoon with Dickerson consistently I will be moving on.

Wtf are the Rays even thinking with this.  Embarrassing for them to DH Robertson ever.

So I read this guy dropped 20 pounds in the offseason to increase his bat speed. He used to be a fantasy darling in Colorado. Looking good so far so why no chatter on here?

I'm sure there's been discussion on Dickerson buried somewhere in a sleeper thread cause I know I've discussed him for 2017 on this board, but I think he could easily be a source of good power. He's best in daily leagues where you can shelter him against lefties particularly tough lefties. I think a lot of his struggles last year can be attributed to a league shift. Dickerson is a dedicated hitter and I think we'll see a lot better things from him this year.

First Three Months 2016:

.214/.263/.451

Last Three Months 2016:

.269/.316/.483

Some platooning involved there, but he hit .274/.323/.528 v. RHP in those three months.

Homer off a lefty to the deepest part of Fenway.  I think we have something here boys.

A homer off a lefty is promising. I liked him in deeper leagues, attibuted last year to the change in leagues/pitchers too.

Obviously Col to TB is about as bad a change in environment as you can get, but C-Dick should still be worth deploying for power.

I added him a while ago and have been pleased with the results. Great power, great average, he is scoring runs as the leadoff hitter. Speed is a problem but he is contributing significantly in the other four hitting categories.

5hrs so far. A leadoff Hr today. I'm surprised not much chatter about him esp in the leadoff spot. Are people reluctant to add him? As a leadoff hitter I like the power he's displaying but does he have no speed?

No - no speed. He is an injury basket case there is no way they are expecting him to run. I can't think of the last time the Rays had a legit leadoff guy - Jennings was supposed to be that guy for a decade but it didn't work out. So the strategy is - bat the guy who knows how to get on base, particularly v righties, at leadoff. CDick fits that bill. As long as he continues to do his job (mash righties) I'm good and there will be days he has multiple RBIs. He is a very worthy bench bat imo.

Dickerson is batting third tonight against a righty in Odorizzi.  This is the first time he's hit third against a righty if I'm not mistaken.  It's a great spot for him.  Hope it's long term.

Sorry, I was looking at the wrong team.  I'm a kindergarten teacher, my brain stopped working hours ago.  Hitting third against a lefty is even better news.

I knew what you meant - I have done the same many times.

Is C-Dick in a semi platoon? Seems to play about half the time vs lefties, who he's actually hitting for AVG (.407) but not power (1HR compared to 5HR vs righties).

I have him in a deeper league and wondering if I should still try and find a backup OF for days he faces a lefty.

As for stats his K% is down over 5 pts to 18.8%, BB up to 7.9%, hitting more line drives so far (21.9%). I think the biggest difference is the reduction in K's letting him get to his power more, only thing I worry about is his counting stats but at least the Rays do look better this year.

I drafted him with the understanding he would be sitting against most lefties but hitting for average (.280+) and power against righties.  He is a career .258 hitter against lefties in 318 AB's with a .693 OPS (room for improvement for sure).  He was sitting against lefties at first, then batting fifth against them, and finally, he hit third last night.  The sample size is still small against lefties this year but things look encouraging.  Overall, his bat speed and aggressiveness at the plate look great.  He looks more confident and adjusted to the league change.  Numbers aside, he is passing the eye test.  He is having great AB's and really squaring up the ball.  He is doing what he needs to do to earn more PT.  If he only sat here and there against tough lefties, we are still looking at plenty of AB's, especially hitting high in the order.  My fantasy senses have been tingling with Dickerson for the last few months and I think he is going to prove that his Colorado numbers were a sign of things to come, and not a Coor's mirage.  Hope I'm right.
