Ryan Mathews 2017 Season Outlook

Recommended Posts

I thought he ran effectively in Philly with the limited touches he acquired. Philly doesn't seem to know what to do with their RBs.

DeMarco Murray ran poorly as well in that offense.

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews is expected to be released once he is healthy following the signing of LeGarrette Blount, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

As soon as the Blount news came in, it meant Mathews would be on his way out. Mathews suffered a neck injury late last year that required surgery, and he may not be designated healthy for another couple of months. If/When on the open market, we can't see teams lining up around the block for a 30-year old (in October), injury prone running back like Mathews.

Comparing anything from when Murray was there (or even McCoy) is useless because you're dealing with different systems (especially from the Kelly era).

With that said, with the short yardage specialist Blount and the passing down specialist Sproles there, I don't think any back gets enough rushing work to really justify anything beyond flex consideration in standard.

Mathews won't be on the Eagles come September. And his injuries limited his ceiling all last season. He was either missing time or dealing with nagging injuries. Guy just can't stay healthy. He doesn't have much value as I doubt he emerges as a #1 on any other team. And probably not much value as a #2 or #3.

Does he latch on with another team once released, or is this the end?

Could be some interesting landing spots if he has anything left.

Steelers? Packers? Back to the Chargers? Bucs?

The guy is a talented every season injury. He is a complete DND for me because everry year i draft him he never delivers because of injuries

The Giants could really use a good back.  If he was picked up by NY would you draft him?  RB40 or so perhaps?  If he lands there then he's got to be considered the favorite to earn the starting job so he likely pushes Perkins down the draft order.

If he is unsigned by draft time, I'd consider grabbing him at the end of my draft on the chance he'll sign somewhere and have a decent season.  At that point may as well take a big swing.

And yes, he will likely be out for the season by week 10, so there is that.

Ravens, Patriots, Giants and Redskins are the only good fantasy locations for him to get instant playing time.

I've always been a fan since his Chargers days and he wasn't that bad last year when he was actually given carries, 4.2 YPC. 155 carries which wildly varied from 19 some weeks then back down to 7 the next.

Wouldn't mind giving him a spot on my bench if he goes somewhere valuable.

Patriots? I don't think they need another RB in an already crowded backfield. I think Giants or Redskins would be his best spot out of that list.

I was thinking the same thing.  Might as well go to the Saints or Seahawks as well.

I know it won't happen, but I wouldn't mind seeing him picked up by the Packers.  I don't like the idea of rolling into the season with Ty at RB being backed up by 2 rookies.

He would instantly be the most talented back on the team. Right now it is crowded but not talented.

Giants, Packers or Redskins would definitely be the dream spots. With him being clear a team should give him a chance soon.

Any new rumblings about a possible landing spot for Mathews? I've been poking around online and haven't found much. Hoping someone might have some insider info. Is he worth a stash, or is he done?
