Justus Sheffield - SP NYY

surprised he has no thread

a LHP the yanks got in a trade for Andrew Miller in 2016.

He has jumped into 41st on baseball america top 100

He can touch 98 mph with his fastball...consistently 92-97 with some "run&sink".  Mid 80s slider and a changeup in progress.  command seems to have been his biggest issue over the last couple years. Hes only 5'11 which seems to hurt his rankings.

He was Very good in Arizona Fall league this year

Just promoted to AAA. 39 K in 28 ip at AA, and 2.25 ERA. He might be pushing for a 2018 position in the Yanks Rotation!

Surprisingly little hype for one of the best pitching prospects in baseball who may be very close to a call-up.

He was considered a top 50 prospect in baseball (top 20 by Keith Law) coming into the season despite the fact that his numbers last year were nothing special.

This year between AA and AAA so far...

40.1 IP

2.01 ERA

1.09 WHIP (23 hits, 21 walks)

53 strikeouts

1 home run allowed

The walks are high but other than that he's been fantastic.

The only thing is, I'm not 100% sure if he would get the first call over Erik Swanson if the Yankees decide to call up a young starter. But the odds of Sheffield being called up at some point this season are pretty high.

Any news on a call up?

Yankees will most likely go with Hale or Rogers to start one of the doubleheader games on Monday.

Sheffield started tonight which rules him out for Monday.

A few rumors floating around that Yankees could use him in a trade. Maybe it's just me, but if he's as good as he's been I can't see that happening. I also read an article where CC Sabathia was quoted saying he's excited to see him develop and hopefully he can get his command figured out and join the rotation. Apparently they have a pretty close relationship and says Sheffield reminds him of himself.

Holding onto him for two weeks or so. I have Efflin coming off the DL but I am willing to keep him DL’d since he is playing Boston... this time of year it is tough to keep pitching prospects if they aren’t promoted right after the All star break.

Bright side is that the Yankees aren’t afraid of promoting pitchers to join the rotation and a trade possibility still on the table...as a yankee fan i hope they keep him. If he wasn’t injured earlier this season, prob would’ve been promoted by now.

What are people's thoughts on his immediate impact if brought up?  His hype from in the fantasy community seems muted to me compared to his real life hype-especially when the Yankees refused to include him in a Machado deal.  Is he a guy that has the pedigree to be excellent right off that bat like a Bieber or someone of that ilk?

He is the Yankees best pitching prospect. Trading him would be a travesty for the Yankees , synonymous trading Sevy in 2015

“If the Yankees fail to trade for a starter before the trade deadline, Aaron Boone said, the Yankees will give serious consideration to promoting pitching prospect Justus Sheffield in the second half of the season.

“I would say Shef is very much [in the mix],” Boone said when asked if Sheffield could contribute immediately, the way Luis Severino did when he was called up in 2015. Sheffield has “had another really good year. He’s putting himself in position probably in the short term to be in consideration for a spot, whether it be a rotation need, whether it be a bullpen need. He certainly is knocking on that door and getting a lot closer, absolutely.”

The Yankees have called up a number of pitchers to round out a rotation that falls off a small cliff after the first three spots in the order. Domingo Acevedo was called up Saturday but didn’t pitch before he was optioned back to Double-A Trenton in return for Giovanny Gallagos, who was officially called up Sunday. Eventually, Luis Cessa is expected to take over that spot in the rotation.

Boone has said previously that they’re still hoping to “fine tune” Sheffield, who has a 2.44 ERA in 11 starts with Triple-A Scranton this season.”

With the talk of Sonny Gray possibly being pulled from the rotation, there's new hope for Sheffield to get a look as a starter at the big league level.

Who knows what they will ultimately do, but it makes sense to me to give the kid a chance to sink or swim sooner rather than later. They are 5.5 games back at the moment and if Sheffield has the poise/makeup to handle the promotion, it could be a big shot in the arm for the Yankees. If he struggles, they're really no worse off than they were with Gray, and at least they have a better idea of what they have down the stretch.
