89Topps 2,597
Guy had a string a good looking starts early last year, then suffered a hip injury and the wheels completely came off. His final stat line was atrocious. He's an athletic guy, so he's intriguing. Struggles with command and keeping the ball inside the park. There anything to see here in 2018? Or is he just a steam against the Marlins & Pirates?
CurvePirate814 76
He had 1 solid month, then the wheels fell off immediately, like you said. He got injured in May. He's definitely worth a 'hold and see' in certain leagues, he was pretty highly touted as a prospect. Fastball last year only averaged 91.7, which I guess could be attributed to the injury. Definitely an intriguing hold.
Popular Post garlando 1,227
Looking at Amir Garrett's stuff and underlying numbers, I think it's clear that he's still very much a work in progress. He does have some intriguing elements but the flaws are big! His fastball was one of the worst in baseball last year, and he throws it almost 62% of the time...it averaged 92mph, opponents batted .339/.431/.690 against it with an absurd ISO of .351. He also struggled to control the pitch as he posted a higher walk rate than K rate with the pitch. It failed to miss bats with just a swinging strike rate of 3.7% and the ground-ball rate was mediocre too (41.2%). All told it was worth -19.2 runs above-average, and among those that pitched at least 110 innings (trying to isolate starting pitchers), which Garrett didn't do because of injury, that would have ranked 9th worst in the majors last year. His Slider is a lot better, and despite a HR problem with the pitch last year that led it to be worth -2.5 runs above average, I think it has good potential! It is a 79 MPH slider which he throws about 22% of the time, and it is Garrett's favorite pitch to put hitters away when ahead of counts last year. 38 of his 62 strikeouts in 2017 came from the Slider - which landed an impressive 20.6% swinging strike rate. The result is that opposing batters really struggled to make contact with it, posting just a .160 average against it. It did, however, get tagged with a HR/FB rate of 37.5% last year which is very likely an outlier despite an overall fly ball rate of 44.4% against the pitch. I think it's reasonable to suggest the HR/FB on the pitch goes down, and if he takes a step forward in terms of control with it, it could be a real weapon. Last up is the changeup which graded out as Garrett's best offering in 2017 being worth 1.6 runs above-average. It averaged 80 MPH and he threw it about 15% of the time. The pitch gets groundballs with a 50% mark, and misses bats reasonable with an 11.5% swinging-strike rate. Opponents hit just .143/.143/.321 against the pitch, that's right he didn't walk a single batter with the pitch. Note that creating more separation in speed between the Slider and the Changeup would probably help both offerings take a step forward. Overall he has a 3 pitch mix that has pretty solid potential highlighted by a potentially plus slider and an above-average changeup, but the fastball is really dragging down the overall mix. He's definitely better than his final line in 2017 imo, but he still has a long ways to go in terms of reaching his ceiling. 9

jfazz23 2,530
Garrett retired all six batters he faced in his spring training debut Sunday, striking out four, drawing the attention of manager Bryan Price, the Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay reports. "Amir was as good as I've ever seen him," Price said. "He had velocity with command and threw the slider and changeup for strikes. He was filthy. That's the type of performance you want to see from a guy that's coming off of a tough season. He came out. He was snorting fire and attacked the zone. It was one of those dare-to-be-noticed moments because he was a standout, an absolute standout." Analysis: The big takeaway from Garrett's performance was how strong his fastball looked, after his fastball was his weakest pitch last season. He still has an uphill battle to win a rotation spot and certainly can't win it on the basis of one spring training outing, but all in all it's better that it was a good outing for him. Cmilne23 10,544
Overwhelmingly unimpressed last season. A guy in that park must pound the bottom of the zone. This guy elevated his 91-92 mph fastball with regularity. Horrific command, awful park. Hard pass for me. Much more intriguing late round young arms to take.

And you won't since Taoball is now working here as Cole Freel: https://majorleaguefantasysports.com/ Maybe the way Garlando is going he will be next to end up getting paid to write about baseball. Nice to see Amir had a good outing. If he continues to impress I may have to look into him again. Edited February 27, 2018 by The Big Bat Theory 3
kidtwentytwo 5,383
Not 100% sure of the history of this guy, but I know he played college basketball. Seems like he has late bloomer written all over. May start off in the pen, but he should get another shot if he keeps pitching well.
