BrianM 1,289
It looks as though Rex may be a winner in UFA RB musical chairs, for now at least. Dion Lewis left, and Rex got a multi-year deal, where right now he should be the first option in the backfield for NE next year. I like him as a sneaky RB2 right now- I feel as though NE produces a value back or two every year when most shy away from their committee. Lewis owners in 2017 and Blount owners in 2016 can attest. The problem with finding the NE value rb is WHEN he becomes a value and for how long can you count on the production until the Pats move in another direction. I wasted a bench spot for the first 5 games waiting for James White to emerge. Traded him away for Corey Coleman on IR. .
BrianM 1,289
True enough. I'm sure a lot of people thought White was going to finally become productive on a weekly basis, and that didnt fly. Part of me hopes they do add Danny Woodhead too. First, for the lol's. Secondly, it means they're less likely to add any more backs, and since i know Woodhead will get hurt, I can count on that and feel good about Burkhead. I can live with Burkhead in a trio with White, who's role is pretty clearly outlined, and Gillislee, who Burkhead outplayed already once. I mostly assumed Gillislee was going to be cut but I read that they want to give him another chance.
Buck Showalter 65
I think what we are hoping for is for Burkhead to be used in the role he had before he got hurt at the end of the regular season, and possibly be expanded. It was basically him and Lewis sharing the early down work with White mixing in on 3rd downs. For a few week period, Burkhead was the GL back. If Gillislee is cut or kept as a backup and they don't bring any FA's in or draft RB's, Burkhead should get most of the early down work that Lewis was getting. I know there are alot of ifs there, but I feel he could have sneaky RB2 value in this scenario and be a good middle round RB target.
Naboo 123
With Sony Michel in and Dion Lewis out, I'm on the fence regarding Burkhead's value in PPR. Can he carve out a solid role in NE or will it be another season of musical chairs in the backfield ? Assuming he stays healthy this time, would you spend a mid/late round pick on him in drafts ? It's always musical chairs in NE, but Burkhead is the most versatile veteran back they have and he was killing it while he was in there. Assuming health, Burkhead should lead that backfield in carries, have a productive number of receptions and, because of the versatility (and blocking ability), I think he'll get the lion's share of the downs at the stripe. SharkSwimmer 4,947
Man, that's a pretty optimistic outlook for Burkead. That the Pats took Sony Michel in the first round tells me that they intend a pretty big role for him. I don't think we can assume the roles will be identical to what they were mid-season. Winky 1,999
I agree the path is clear for Michel... But to gain a heavy workload in Belichick's offense early (and as a rookie), he'll need to develop quickly... that can happen, but maybe it takes a little time. He can't fumble in camp, at all. He has to commit to learning his blocking assignments - Belichick isn't going to let Brady get blown because of a rookie's blocking deficiencies . I am not saying he can't get pick it all up, but it's not a given that he rolls right into the spot reserved for the lead dog.
markrc99 609
Yeah, with Burkhead the issue is volume. But once they're down there, he gets a lot of looks. Things may change but he was an easy read, if he was at or near 100%, RZ looks were going to be there!
The Three Reynolds 3
I’m a big fan of Burkhead at that moment. I’ll take it a step further (from a sneaky RB2) and I like him as a strong RB2 option in PPR formats. In his 10 games last year, he had at least three catches in six games, found the end zone wether it be receiving, rushing or both in six different games and scored 13 or more points in six games (that Is RB1 production). Lord_Varys 4,626
Love him in best ball format. You never know when Michel might fumble and Burkhead might take over for the rest of the game. NE RBs score a ton of TDs. Like him for cheap depth in redraft, just depends how cheap. It's just that you don't know when you can start him, because of the above. He will score some TDs though -- his ball security and goal line running record are both pretty good.
SharkSwimmer 4,947
As bye-week filler, you probably could not do much better, health permitting.

Kind of saw that in my playoff loss where when trailing in Miami, I guess then he isnt the guy? He was getting pretty consistent red-zone carries down the stretch, the last several weeks of the year, he was putting up RB1 numbers, you just never know with the Pats and thats the maddening part. joshua18 7,029
Was so great to get him in the 8th rd of June/July drafts. Never let anyone telling you that early drafting doesn't have benefits.
Magoo 1,588
With Jeremy Hill in tow and Michel coming back, this guy is going to be the most overdrated RB this year. His value was mostly TD dependent last year.

Now his adp should swap with sony. $7 sold to me last night in an auction.?
