If Ottavino got the role that would be pretty juicy.  Could turn into one of those "keep him in the set-up role" situations though.  IF they move on from Davis that is.

It would be surprising if they didn't give it to Ottavino though given how good he is.  I understand the whole keep him in the set-up role thing, but given just how ridiculous he'd likely be in the role, I can see them just doing the easy thing.  We'll see soon I guess because I can't see them sticking with Davis now.

Have to wonder if a phantom (or real) DL stint isn't coming for Davis. Rockies are in contention and to lose back to back games like this has to be incredibly disheartening for the team, especially when you have a guy in Ottavino who has been lights out.

If there was any doubt that Fry had lost his closer's role after his epic meltdown on Saturday, there's no doubt anymore.

Or maybe not. Not according to Rotoworld's blurb anyway. This pen is in flux, nothing has been decided.

Quote
Hector Santiago notched his first save since 2012 with a scoreless 10th inning Friday against the Rays.

Santiago got the call after Yoan Moncada put the White Sox ahead with a double in the top of the 10th. The veteran southpaw threw 15 pitches in the frame and worked around a leadoff walk to Mallex Smith. He induced a double play grounder from Matt Duffy to end the ballgame. The White Sox closer job is open after the recent trade of Joakim Soria, but we wouldn’t expect Santiago to see regular chances in the future. Jace Fry would appear to be the most likely candidate for saves.

Osuna should not be handed the job like some are saying. Rondon has more than earned it.

My personal feeling is that I doubt Osuna will be handed the job just outright like that. It's not quite Chapman over again imo.  They will probably start him off in a key set up role and see how that goes.  However, to be sure the leash Rondon built up over the last 2 months will be shortened to just about nothing...

You guys like Ottavino as a top 15-ish closer if he gets the job?  Plenty of opportunities it seems and he has been spectacular.

Absolutely.

Not a horrible debut for Giles.  Obviously his slider was working since he struck out the side.  Seemed to be a bit of bad luck with him giving up the run since he gave up two singles, but he got into scoring position because they weren't even holding the runners on.

I know the Yankees removed Chapman for a time last season, but Davis has 2 more years left on his deal at 17 plus million dollars per season, leads the national league in saves, and he only gave up 1 hit last night so it wasn't like he was rocked.  What is interesting is that he has the same ERA at home and away-5.09!!  He is having trouble getting righties out.  They are hitting .259 on him on the season.  A closer needs to be much more dominant than that.

To me that sounds like pure speculation by the writer, not anything that Renteria or anyone else in White Sox management said.  Fry's usage the past two days as a one-batter left-handed specialist with no one out in the 8th inning is very concerning.

I thought Avilan was the top closer candidate out of the White Sox. Got the save the other night and the bottom of the 9th in a tie game.. all signs of closerish behaviour.

It's possible, but who really knows.  Maybe that was just because there were lefties up that inning, but one of thing is for sure, you can't put much stock in most of Rotoworld's blurbs anymore (included the one posted above).

Possible, though “bottom 9th of a tie game” isn’t where closers generally pitch.

Closers will often pitch top 9 of a tie game (when home team), because there will no longer be a save opp in that game. If the road team, closer will often be saved for if/when a save opp arises.

Under, sneaky pickup is the guy they just promoted. Wahl

It's almost exactly like the Baltimore situation, although Swarzak has been good in his last two save opps.  Carrol and Wahl are both young guys who have just recently been promoted that probably should be given an opportunity to close since their teams are going nowhere, but both of them will probably be too lazy to bother trying either.

Obviously I could be very wrong, and especially since the trade deadline was a disappointment for creating very many new worthwhile closer options, I'm hoping I am wrong.  We can always use more worthwhile options.

Swarzak was so good last year. Not sure what happened this year.

Why are we convinced he's terrible?  He has 20ip this year so far

I used to think Melancon was invincible too, as far as big contracts, and job security. I realize that injuries are what initially derailed his closing career, but he was never able to do anything when he got healthy to take back the gig. Those big contracts definitely add a little bit of leash, but in the end these guys need to perform better than they have to hold the role...especially on a team still in the playoff hunt. If they didn't have an arm in COL to replace Davis with, I would feel much more comfortable, but they do, and I am worried. I thought Davis had gotten through his struggles, since he was having a decent little run before his last two blowups happened. My guess is they give him 1 more shot, and if he blows it, or even looks too shaky, the Rockies will make the switch. Sucks for us owners right now, because we are stuck till something happens. I've considered a straight drop in a 14 team league, but Davis has had a tonne of save opps, and whoever closes for COL down the stretch will to. Of course he is worthless on the trade market for the time being as well. These MLB teams need to start watching this thread, and stop trying to pay for saves ??
