Mike Foltynewicz 2019 Outlook

Recommended Posts

Huge breakout year. K rate spiked, HRs down, however his BABIP against (.251) suggests a deal of luck too.

So who's the real Folty, someone better than 2017 but worse than 2018? Would imagine he'll be overdrafted in redrafts, but those of us in keepers still have a good value going forward. A 2018 FIP of 3.37 and xFIP 3.77 show more like the pitcher I expect entering next season.

I'd heavily lean towards keeping him rostered, chart was pretty promising again last night: FB- pretty much the same as last time, 95+ MPH average, was just missing spots. Threw 22--15 strikes wi

Basically one bad inning did him in...otherwise very impressive and chart continues to trend upward: FB- continues to gain steam, averaged a new high of almost 97 MPH, topping at 99! threw 37--23

An article here about sustaining K breakouts but not sure what to make of it:

https://fantasy.fangraphs.com/what-makes-a-strikeout-rate-breakout-last/

SwStr% jumped to a still low 10.3% which is a red flag. K-BB% huge jump to 18% but will it stick if he's not making hitters whiff?

dont know what that means as i dont do auctions.  what does that translate to in snake 12 team?

Around pick 150th to 200th range I am assuming. Folty should return by early May.

#Braves’ Foltynewicz (elbow) threw a side session on mound this morning without incident. No timetable for return but he’s basically starting spring training from scratch, so don’t expect him back before late April.

Be great if he can ramp back up during April in extended and then be ready to roll by May.

throwing 50 pitches in intrasquad game this friday.  then 65-70 pitches on april 4th the following thursday.  he may only need 1 or 2 rehab starts and could come back mid to late april.  i got him so late in my keeper he could hold great value

Encouraging rehab start last night, didn't allow a hit in 5 scoreless at AAA, 56 pitches--a couple BB and couple Ks

Sitting low 90s but popped a few 96s too. One more in AAA and if he feels good back to the ATL

I just acquired him in a trade. Starting to regret it already. Didn't realize he was out because of elbow soreness oof.

I'm not concerned about the skills though. He's always been someone to watch for a breakout.

Yeah it's not the best attribute for your pitchers (elbow flares) but his stuff/velo and apparently general health seems to be OK at the moment?

Another rehab (final) appearance on Mon and if he feels good then back to the rotation for the weekend. Fingers and toes crossed!

Foltynewicz (elbow) allowed six earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two across 5.1 innings in a rehab start against Triple-A Durham on Sunday. He was sitting 93 mph with his fastball and had both his slider and curveball working, Kyle Glaser of Baseball America reports.

Foltynewicz's numbers weren't strong, but he was hit hard in the early going while he struggled to get the feel for his secondary pitches. However, his slider improved as the game went on and he threw a total of 89 pitches, both good signs for his return. Based on this outing, Foltynewicz could rejoin the rotation later this week.

Touki set the bar so damn low that this outing even in AAA looks like a damn blessing.

That... doesn't seem ideal. Wasn't he 96, 97 last year?

FB- averaged 95 MPH and had a ton of run to it, got 3 whiffs with it

SI- sinker sat over 94 MPH, also good movement to it, 1 whiff

SL- was main secondary, 86 MPH, pounded the zone with it (71% strike rate) 17 strikes/17 swings and 5 whiffs

CH- only 7--5 strikes, 3 swings and a whiff, on firmer end at 86 MPH

Also spun up 1 curve for a strike at 79 MPH, had ok shape, be nice to see it brought out more moving forward...all in all not a bad debut, given the circumstances.
