Because if he's up immediately after they've manipulated his service time, the organization can't save face over the Mather comments. If you saw DiPoto's comments reported on today he indicated he wants to see Kelenic get more AB's against left handed pitching even though "he's acing that test right now".

Can't wait until the farce of "we need X top prospect to work on some things first before we're comfortable with a promotion" to be eradicated forever from collective bargaining agreements. Then magically, top prospects will begin to suddenly be ready for a promotion on opening day more often than not barring a legit reason to hold them down (like truly being blocked by productive regulars, etc.).

First Bomb in Triple A

Another Bomb

The 6-7 thing is more important than the super 2 discount in year 7 was my point. I really think it’s overblown except for the cheapest of teams.    As to where he plays. I will keep this simpl

Also just to respond to this. If they are going to manipulate until Super 2, why not just wait until April next year and get another year of control? Shrug.  Getting the extra year >>> Super 2 savings.  Not saying you're wrong, but Seattle isn't that small a market, they can afford a 1 year 20-25 million deal on a very good player in 6 years (anyone can).  No team is 20-25 million dollars short of adding another player if they want to, not even the Rays.

Two reasons:

1.)A work stoppage and labor deal is likely and it is also likely that current MLB'ers will not be grandfathered into a new system.

2.)The Mariners are currently tied for the second best record in all of baseball (and also in a dead heat with the A's in the AL West).  It's in the early going, but at some point teams do recognize that meaningful post-season runs and winning seasons translate to dollars above and beyond what they would save on Kelenic.

Kelenic, Franco, I said from the beginning that I expect these guys to show up the instant the Super Two deadline has passed.

I agree with your reasoning in 1, I've said that many times here too. Just about people  getting called up in general, but #2 is more of a reason to call him up yesterday, the next best day being today, and the next tomorrow.

Jarred Kelenic is expected to land in the Majors at some point this season, but given the Mariners’ solid start and the state of the club’s outfield, don’t expect to see the star prospect in Seattle in the immediate future.

The Mariners wanted Kelenic -- who hasn’t played in a competitive game since 2019 because of the pandemic -- to return to the alternate training site to begin the season, giving him a chance to see more left-handed pitching. In 117 Minor League games in 2019 (only 21 of which were as high as Double-A), Kelenic posted a .940 OPS against right-handers compared to a .757 mark against lefties.

“It’s no fault of his own, but he hasn’t had a chance to see a lot of it,” GM Jerry Dipoto said of the need for Kelenic to see more lefties. “Not shockingly, he’s acing that test right now. Injury aside, he’s going to play in the big leagues in the not-too-distant future.”

Of course, “not-too-distant” is a relatively vague term, leaving no firm timetable for Kelenic to make his debut. Given the team’s early-season results with Mitch Haniger, Taylor Trammell and Ty France all performing well and reigning AL Rookie of the Year Kyle Lewis back from the injured list, Dipoto expects that quartet to handle outfield and DH duties for the time being.

“When you break camp with a team, committing to those players for the first 30 or 40 games, it would be unfair to judge what they do without giving them that sample to work with,” Dipoto said. “[Kelenic] is going to get here soon, but I don’t expect that’s going to be in a matter of days.”

I expect a callup on May 15th. Let him get two weeks of MIIB baseball and he will get call up. Or maybe it's an excuse to be called up on June 2nd.

Taylor Trammell isn't doing well at all. Nor do I necessarily expect him to. Lewis just got back, but he ended the season horribly last year. He won ROTY because he started so hot and the season was so short.  Neither of these dudes will prove to be better than Kelenic, and perhaps quickly.

Trammell looks horrible and is horrible...Probably why he's been traded 3 times already.

I'm betting we see Kelenic sometime in early to mid May, definitely sometime within the next couple weeks.

Haniger and Lewis have the other 2 OF spots locked up but chances are, Trammell will likely be still hitting near the mendoza line. He and Haggerty will be the odd men out.

Thank you. I've read Trammell is "doing well" a couple times in this thread and was confused. Dude is under .150 with an astronomical K-rate. Basically, he sucks.

Lewis will remain a good everyday player.  Haniger is back with a vengeance.  Haggerty is currently on a red hot streak.  Trammel may be slumping but he was also a high prospect in the day and you don't just trash a guy after a few weeks. As much as this is obviously about an extra year, the Mariners have the current outfield to point to to prove they don't "need" Kelenic up immediately.

I expect Kelenic to hit when minor league games start up next week.   The A/L West probably remains tight till the end.

Trammel and Haggerty should not pose any threat to Kelenic getting playing time.   Kelenic should have made the team out of spring training if it were not for the shenanigans owners play with young players and their service time.   Kelenic is a stud.

but how is his defense

They didn’t go with that excuse this time.

I’m assuming the conversation went something like this:

Mariners owner John Stanton: “so our blithering idiot CEO just spilled the beans about our plans to promote Kelenic in late April. How are we going to handle this?”

Soon to be demoted executive: “well, we could do the right thing and promote him out of spring training.”

<dead silence followed by boisterous laughter from the rest of the room>

Jerry Dipoto: “okay, that was funny. But seriously, we can’t promote him in late April now or else he’ll file a grievance for sure.”

Owner: “how about we push him out until mid May and say he needs to work on something?”

Dipoto: “his defense?”

Owner: “no, that’s too obvious. How about we say he needs to work on hitting lefties?”

Dipoto: “That’s perfect! See you in mid-May, Kelenic.”

What a horrible organization. I hate them a little bit more every day he's not up.

Agreed. They stole him off my favorite team and now they’re robbing my fantasy teams.
