On my never ending quest to find sleepers this guy really jumps out to me.

32 HRS in last 162 games.

The lineup is improved but is he even the starter?

To me it looks like he could hit 35 HRs if he starts.

Where is the hype?

Oh yes, 1B is certainly a position you must have a defensive specialist at, so important... also key to bat the defensive specialist 2nd and 5th... it really is monetary investment IMO.

if you want a homer early in games take Reyes if you want one late/clutch its Renfroe also Renfroe doesn't get replaced defensively

An estimate: 900 strikeouts and 50 walks with 30hr.

Not guaranteed to start. Fighting in the OF between Myers, Renfroe, and Reyes. Cordero needs starts too.

Yeah, that SD OF is going to be a headache until Myers gets hurt. But as long as he's healthy, he's starting virtually every game in LF. That leaves Renfroe and Reyes battling for RF with Margot and Cordero fighting for starts in CF. It's just hard to see how many starts any of their OFs not-named Myers will get.

This issue with Renfroe is he just doesn't play enough. They need to trade an OF

He will if he continues to hit like he did in the 2H last year and picked right up yesterday. He's a superior athlete to Reyes and a better fielder. They are both RH. Reyes has to really hit the cover off the ball to earn playing time and he's started a putrid 1 for 16 while hacking at everything (41% o swing in a very small sample).

It's a crowded OF and a trade would be great, but he can still earn it.

I'm with Super Italian. I love me some Hunter Renfroe, can't believe I haven't posted about him, talked too much Reyes/Renfroe in the Reyes thread, my bad.

As I mentioned above, he's a superior athlete and better (but not great) fielder than Reyes so he's got a big leg up if he can hit as well or better.

He's going to have to play his way into an everyday role and given his leg up in the field, I like his chances.

His 2 HR last night after Reyes struggling is HUGE for immediate playing time. I'm hoping for 40 HR and the NL version of Kris Davis if he truly breaks out, maybe slightly better average.

What's wrong with the Khris Davis comp?

Davis 2016-2017: .247 / .322 / .526

Renfroe 2018: .248 / .302 / .504.

Seems like a very good comp to me for Renfroe's upside. Of course, his downside is a platoon player who hits 20 HR in 350 AB.  Yes, he needs a big April (or a slow April by Franmil, Franchy or Manny) to get the 600 PA to make those numbers happen. But it's a totally realistic, albeit not fairway, outcome.

That's not an expectation, it's his potential upside. It's certainly within his skills, he's a high pedigree 70 power bat. If everything clicks, that's his potential.

This thread is way too quiet, Renfroe is following up his monster 19 HR 2Nd half last year by absolutely obliterating the ball and showing his steadily improved discipline is continuing to improve.

It's still too small a sample to draw conclusions but his Pitch Info O-swing is 28.6%, improved from 32.7 last year and 35.5 the year before. He's got 70% hard contact... he's obliterating everything... former first round pick with high pedigree, 70 grade power, monster 2018 2H, improving discipline, mashing, superior athlete to Reyes who is struggling mightily... this is a train you want to hitch a ride on! Why is the Reyes thread 9 pages and this place dead? Let's gooooo!

Need to look at Reyes underlying stats before saying he’s struggling mightily (he’s not), but I agree

I agree. I was more of a Reyes guy, overlooked this cat who had a great 2nd half and carrying it on so far.

He is the one deserving of everyday AB's, even with semi-reg games. Problem is will he ever become a FT regular with so many OF options?

Good sign was I think he was hitting cleanup last night? Hard to bench your cleanup hitter surely, they need protection for Manny.

2 for 22 is struggling... you can point to BABIP if you want but only 15% LD and gobs of FB none of which left the park until yesterday. His FB distance was pretty poor last year so it doesn't surprise me tons of FB didn't translate to average for him. He's also late and not pulling the ball much at all.

He could snap out of it, sure, but point is with Reyes not producing and Renfroe crushing, he has a chance to force extra playing time and win ABs.

I tell you one thing, having Myers, Margot, Reyes and Renfroe, means the Padres have a great hitter coming off the bench late when needed.  So far all 3 of the sluggers have had a PH homer, while Margot has had a couple big hits to start rallies when coming in late
