Promo Note:

Patrick Sandoval was promoted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Sandoval had a 2.06 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 145:29 K:BB over 122.1 innings last season as he worked his way from Low-A to the Double-A level by the end of the season. The 22-year-old had a 3.60 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 20 innings at Double-A Mobile this season, and has been a fast-rising prospect for the Angels since being acquired from the Astros for Martin Maldonado last July.

I don’t know why he’s not talked about more.  I started to follow him halfway thru last season.  The last two years have seen him put up good numbers and he’s young, so not a late prospect bloomer. I saw his command rated a present 40 and future 45. I’m confused by that, as he only walked 29 in 122 innings.  This lead to a whip last year of under 1, and this year his whip is 1.06.  I guess scouts don’t like his fastball because it’s not 97-98, but the fangraphs writeup mentioned that he has an almost vertical arm angle which probably helps his deception w his plus curve.

It is tough to get really excited about a guy sitting 88-92 unless he has multiple + secondary offerings which he does not. There is some deception in the delivery so that helps a bit. As far as the command thing you asked about. He has good if not plus control, and that’s why he doesn’t walk a lot of guys. But that doesn’t necessarily point to really good command. Command is putting the ball where you want in the strike zone, not just merely putting it in the strike zone. This is all just my opinion, nobody crucify me please.

Patrick Sandoval debuted in AAA yesterday, got stung a bit (as the PCL can do) 3.1 IP 8H 1ER 1BB 3K...2 HRA but otherwise kept the ball on the ground.

Forrest Whitley - 0.2 IP, 1 K, 1 BB, 4 H, 5 ER 😫

Matt Manning - 7 IP, 9 K, 1 BB, 3 H, 0 ER 😍

Wow, that’s almost identical to Lewis Thorpe’s line. Except he went 1 inning:

1 IP, 6 hits, 5 ER, 1 BB, 0 K’s

Doesn’t appear either guy will be up this year.

Jazz Chisholm 1-4 with his 4th HR in 3 days. Gotta love the .176 .516 .822 slash line from this guy. Striking out at a ridiculous rate but does have 5 HRs in last 10 games.

Christian Pache 0-3 1BB 1K

Austin Riley 0-3 1BB 2K

Nolan Gorman 1-3 1BB 2K

Alex Kirilloff 1-4

Oscar Mercado AAA (CLE) 2-5, HR

Trevor Larnach A+ (MIN) 3-5, 2HR, 4RBI

Corbin Martin AAA (HOU) 5INN, 4H, 1ER, 2BB, 4K

Mercado should be up yesterday. The Tribe are cheap.
