Lamar Jackson 2020 Outlook

Recommended Posts

Lamar is inaccurate because media tells you that he’s inaccurate. Not because he actually is.

He’s much better at certain throws than others. And for whatever reason NFL fans have a deep ball fetish (something he isn’t as good at), but guys like Russ and Kyler are pretty average throwing over the middle of the field and that doesn’t matter because they throw moon balls for 50 yards more than the average joe.

RG3?

I love julio, but unfortunately this isn't street fighter where he can go "yoga arms" and catch one of lamars errand passes.

2020 Accuracy Stats:

Bad Throw Pct.:

LJ: 17.6

RW: 15.8

On-target Pct.:

LJ: 75.3

RW: 79.5

Not seeing a world of difference here between Lamar and Russell, personally.

(just playing devil's advocate here):  wouldn't you need to also see the average depth of target to go along with those percentages.  would be a huge difference if they're only 2% apart on bad throws, but Wilson's depth of target is like 8 more yards lol

Sure - I mean there are all sorts of additional angles you would want to take a look at, if you were interested in doing a deep-dive comparison of Jackson and Wilson.  But for purposes of the conversation at hand (i.e., is LJ woefully inaccurate as a passer?), I think broad strokes suffice to paint the picture.

Lamar this season was 7th in intended air yards per attempt (IAY/PA) at 8.6. He has one of the lowest check down percentages in the NFL and mostly feasts in the intermediate. Which isn't even a great thing...he needs to check the ball down more.

He's also 10th in completed air yards per completion. The Ravens are also in the bottom half of the league in YAC per completion. https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2020/passing_advanced.htm

c'mon man, anyone with eyes can see that  he struggles with passes outside the numbers. doesn't matter who the target is

I'm not sold on Roman or this current offense. Maybe that's the problem. Roman (and evidently Harbaugh) believes the answer to maximizing the "brilliance" of LJax is to run a glorified wishbone in the NFL. That is a reaction of fear, not aggression.

It's a chicken/egg proposition: idiot coaches or LJax himself. LJax has shown enough to me to go with a different OC but that is not going to be happening.

What passes outside the numbers? Deep fades yes, outs no lolol. Comebacks/hitches no. My goodness that's literally how they drove the ball on the Titans throughout the game in the playoffs. Attacking them to the boundary. AND IT WORKED.

And the weirdest thing about statements like this is NFL fans think that's something that unique to him lol. If you're not Patrick Mahomes or Aaron Rodgers (and Brady at one point), you throw better at certain areas of the field than others. Josh Allen is much better throwing to his right than to his left. Kyler is spotty throwing the ball intermediate, especially over the middle of the field. Russell Wilson isn't that great at quick game compared to going long, that's why he struggled the back half of the year when teams took the deep ball away. Brees and Big Ben can't halfway through the ball downfield anymore. Baker is limited in his own right. Nobody ever said he was an elite thrower of the ball...he's a good QB...which for some reason seems to offend people on here lol.
