Taysom Hill 2020 Outlook

Message added by tonycpsu

[ As mentioned previously, Hill's TE eligibility is a league/platform-specific issue that needs to be discussed in either the Commissioner's Corner or Platform Central thread.  Believe it or not, there are people who just want to discuss his fantasy outlook without arguing about which positional eligibility is correct.  Please help us out here and take those discussions elsewhere. ]

Someone should tell Payton that “Jack of all trades, master of none” isn’t actually a desirable trait in a sport league built on playing specific positions.

Yes, let’s inform a SB winning coach who’s been to three NFCCGs, has 131 wins, and a .630 winning percentage (all at a franchise with little-to-no positive history prior to his arrival) what is desirable and not desirable in football. Lol.

taysom hill owners once their fellow league managers see him slotted into the TE position

I really like his matchup this weekend, Atlanta is last in the league against TE's, so I'm expecting a pretty big game.

The cap is not getting slashed $75 MM lol, and the Saints (Loomis) have always figured out ways to work around the cap. The Hill deal is not gonna affect what they do this off-season much at all. Shoot, they aren't even up against the cap too bad this year, as they have almost 8 MM in space right now.

Had a look at this OTC article today - if the salary cap drops to $175m, New Orleans will be $75m *over* the cap in 2021:

This signing is looking dumber and dumber by the month.

Why? The contract is cheap as hell for the future franchise QB given what the position goes for these days.

We've been through this in April. Feel free to continue on page one.

Also, hi Taysom's mom.

If Brees gets hurt again, do you think they'll turn to Hill as the starter or go with Jameis Winston and have Hill remain a gadget player?  Hill is already 30 years old so I think it's now or never for him.  I read that the Saints still view him as Brees' successor but then why did they sign Winston?

Well no, the cap now is $198.2m. A drop to $175m is a drop of $23m.

My point is look at their books - where are they going to get that cap space from? The can is going a looooong way down the road.

I think they have already agreed to spread the loss of revenue hit over the next 5 seasons, so at worst the cap might stay flat for next year.

Every year people predict the saints demise because of their 'cap issues' or some such thing, and I agree they do kick the can down the road often...at some point it seems like it should catch up to them. They mostly mitigate it because the cap has continued to rise (and they draft very well and find undrafted guys to contribute). I guess I'll worry about the cap next year and enjoy another season of great football from them and hopefully 'cap hell' will be offset by a title.

Fwiw, I agree that the Taysom deal didn't make a ton of sense to me, as I have stated throughout, but it is not likely to break them either. They continue to evolve their usage of him, and now other teams are gonna try and copy it too. He's a unique player, but can't imagine he's stepping in for Brees.

I targeted him late.

Yall know he is listed as a TE in ESPN?

There is legitimate use for him in FF as it is and there is a slim chance you could be starting a QB in your TE spot.

I don’t think there is legitimate use for him at all in fantasy, and there isn’t a chance I’d start him at TE unless I was desperate. He’s had a grand total of 86 touches and 13 pass attempts in the last two years. There’s nothing legitimate about that in fantasy. And if Brees goes down again, Winston will be the QB.

13 pass attempts for 6 completions and an interception, and one beautiful catch: a 21M contract. Can't get more efficient than that.

Taysom would have finished as TE#13 last year had he been cross listed.

And he essentially missed 5 games when Brees went down and they couldn’t afford to line him up everywhere.

So with more usage this year it is reasonable to expect that he will finish as a TE1 (i.e. top 12).

Then there is a chance he gets used a lot more in the redzone at different positions.

There is also a chance of even more fantasy upside if other events unfold.

Edit: Look at the Saints most important game of the year. Playoff game vs the Vikings.

50 yards passing

50 yards rushing

25 yards receiving 1 TD

15.5 points in standard as a TE.

A part of me wondered if Payton limited Hill as a QB in week 1 just so Brees could go head to head with Brady.

On MNF Payton will have some razzle dazzle lined up.

I think Taysom will score a TD this week in some capacity.

Yeah play calling was really bland outside of the trick play to Kamara

Hoping this flies under the radar.

Hill is TE eligible in many leagues/platforms. If Brees is out you've got to think this is Payton's chance to integrate Hill even more so into the offense whether throwing or running. God knows he'll want to minimize Winston mistakes.

In a TE wasteland, I wonder if Hill could be a sneaky pickup.

I don't believe Hill's role will be anything more than it was when Brees was hurt last year. He'll still be the Swiss army knife and be involved, but this will be Winston's team with Brees out. It's his audition for the Saints in 2021 and beyond as well as other teams.

Interesting take.

I've heard that Payton think's Hill is the heir apparent and if that's the case now is the time to make greater use of him.

They gave Hill the big contract, but I don't believe that makes him the heir apparent. Nor do I believe Payton views him as the heir apparent. He'll be 31 at the start of the 2021 season, and given how injury-prone he was at BYU, I don't see how Hill can be counted upon as a starting QB for 16 games in the NFL.

unless taysom hill could get a rb or wr designation...nope.

Well, what I was saying above is that he DOES have TE designation. I mean...can you do worse?

Hell...he probably has a decent chance at a rushing TD...he may throw one.
