Yasmani Grandal 2021 Outlook

Recommended Posts

Likely a top 5 or even top 3 catcher for fantasy purposes in 2021 due to his job security, playability, and power + OBP combo.

Good lineup, will get a decent amount of runs and a lot of RBIs.

Catcher is a boring wasteland, and to be honest, there likely won't be a lot of room for profit with where he will be going in drafts.

Any reason to buy him at whatever his current ADP is when you are looking at this thread?

Currently going about 130 between Contreras & d'Arnaud.

Kind of feels like one of the last options before you really start to go shopping in the bargain bin.

Like him a lot this year if you miss out on JTR. Seems like the cheaper, safe play in the Catcher wasteland.

I have him just behind JTR value-wise in an OBP league, but it gets pretty ugly after those two.

Underlying metrics going in a fast downward direction, but maybe 1-2 last years of productivity can be squeezed out of this guy

Sometimes "fast" just means over a tiny sample... he has an xwOBA better than Machado, Eloy, Gallo, and a bunch of other well-regarded bats since the start of 2019, plus he plays catcher.

This guy gets no love. Catcher is absolutely dead and this guy has enough to finish as the #2 catcher (or even #1 if Realmuto gets hurt) because of all of the pop he has.

One month down. Number #19 catcher in my league. Seven hits on the season. Yes, I know he walked four times today. But still…….

WTF?

This guy has to have the biggest disparity between opinions of OBP owners and opinions of standard owners. Nine walks in three games!

Yeah O-1 today with a strike looking with 3 BBs. Of course he's OBP league gold, but this is bizarre as Sharks said. Its ok to swing the bat now and then, Yasmanian Devil.

Is this guy the most useless player ever in non OBP leagues? He’s pretty much the equivalent of not rostering a catcher.

Even in OBP leagues he's a one category contributor. 5 runs scored in the last 2 weeks, of course zero stolen bases. It's not as if he's making good on the do nothing approach at the plate.  Steve Stone, the Sox tv analyst, was talking yesterday about how the Sox didn't sign him to stand up there and only take pitches.  In the last 7 days he has 3 official at bats.  His last 14 plate appearances he's 0-1 with 13 walks.

Will be 29% when the leaderboards update to reflect his 4 BB in 5 PA from today.

Not a whole lot of fun to roster in AVG leagues these days, but he's certainly helping his team out there.  At this point, why even bring a bat to the plate?

2nd straight off day, what minor injury is he nursing that they aren't telling us about? The blurbs are couching it as a benching in favor of Collins which  seems ridiculous to me. Even with his putrid .BA he's going to improve on it quickly.

Health seems fine now as he played both games of yesterday's doubleheader. Only TLR would still have his primary catcher out there for 14 innings of baseball. Gotta love it.

And only Grandal could make 14 innings of baseball look like 9 in a 5x5 roto context.  His days of being anything more than a streaming catcher in AVG leagues or a middling option in OBP leagues seem to be over.

He has 42 BBs, 37 Ks, 33 TOTAL BASES. He's got decent counting stats, too, 6/18 rbi/22 rs, but the average is hard to stomach. Still hard to believe he can't get it well above the Mendoza line, but there have been many better options at Catcher in normal leagues. But he still has to be considered an OBP league monster (.393 currently), especially in 2 catcher formats. I'm still surprised they aren't playing Zach Coilins more.
