2021 Middle Relievers Thread

Recommended Posts

Over the last month Scott Barlow’s ERA is 6.52 and his WHIP is 1.66. He gave up a couple of hits last night too. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned.

Am I allowed to ask for your ROS rankings for a group of MRs (saves + holds) in this thread or is that too specific of a question? If it is does someone want to take a crack at maybe re-ranking the top 20 non full time closer RPs for saves+hold leagues?

Tay.Rogers

Stanek

Pomeranz

Dev.Williams

Pending how long Dev. is hurt. Him and Hader are a strong duo at the end of the game, but shoulder in march/april and now july has an elbow issue.

Hey fellas - after the madness of all these moves going down, has anyone's stock really improved for SV/HOLDS leagues? Curious if there's a few guys that people are really trying to add

Thinking Nick Anderson.

Kinda of a no brainer. If he comes back as the same pitcher he was in 2019 through 2020, then he'll be elite but maybe light on saves cause they use him all over, like everyone else. Delayed due to covid now...

Givens. Bednar. Wick. Finnegan.

Wick is not currently active, but could be a stash and sleeper to eventually take over the Cubs closing gig. That team got so bad overnight that I wouldn't want any part of it, really. I'm down on ex-Cub Tepera now too, as he gave up a few runs in his White Sox debut without recording an out, and could just get totally buried in that pen.

Steve Cishek will get more value, as he figures to be the primary setup/handcuff to Iglesias, as Maddon said Mike Mayers was getting a blow from high leverage work and Tony Watson was traded to SF.

Although it will be hard for him to crack the hierarchy of Boxberger-Williams-Hader, another weapon in the Brewers pen is Jake Cousins, having allowed just a .085 BA over 15.1 scoreless innings with a 22:5 K:BB rate and 1 W, 4 holds in that span. Someone to monitor in NL only and deep dynasty in case Hader gets traded in the offseason.

I’m also very confused on Diekman’s usage. I don’t watch the A’s games, but it feels like he’s not being used in hold situations at all. Just blowouts or when losing. His K numbers are great, but I’m wondering if it’s time to let him go

Just dropped him for Bummer. His underlying metrics still look good but not a fan of his usage.

Any good middle relievers flying under the radar and worth speculating on for deeper leagues? Our league doesn’t count holds but but someone with great ratios and could grab the occasional save. Maybe Tyler Matzek? Or Adam Ottavino?

Fangraphs said Nick Anderson’s velocity is still down still so not as bullish ros.

People will still look to add him, but I agree-I don't foresee his initial outings being very high leverage, and I'd turn my attention to Pete Fairbanks before Anderson this year. Nothing about the Rays approach will change this year, or next. Spring Training, will there even be a 1% chance of Kevin Cash naming a closer?

I think for points leagues a thread about SP/RP eligible pitchers would be great. Not sure how common it is but in our league people will stack their benches with guys like Mchugh or lesser known guys like Andre Jackson. Just a thought.
