Mike Yastrzemski 2021 Outlook

Say some prayers, everything good is just about gone now, hit in the hand and immediately  in pain and taken out.

Calm down and wait for the medical assessment.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that Mike Yastrzemski believes he escaped with just a bruise when he was hit by a pitch on the left hand Monday.

It sounds like Yastrzemski himself traded texts with Heyman and shared the good news. Teammate Brandon Crawford also spoke to Yastrzemski and said the outfielder was moving his fingers around with no problems. Yastrzemski is on his way back to the Giants' spring training home in Scottsdale to be examined and we should get official word from the club before long, but it sounds like he dodged a bullet here.

any chance there's a fracture behind the scene?

If you read the post above this one, no.  People just rush to judgement so quickly.  Wait until the med staff has it's say.  Well unless it is the Mets clown med staff.

X-rays on Mike Yastrzemski's left hand came back negative.

Whew. Yastrzemski was struck by a Sean Manaea offering during Monday's Cactus League game, but he's managed to come away with just a bruise. The Giants are listing him as day-to-day and they should have their right fielder for Thursday's opener against the Mariners.

Is this guy alive ?

Always check the blurbs:

Mike Yastrzemski was scratched from the Giants' lineup on Monday due to left hand soreness.

You might recall that it was Yastrzemski's right hand which was hit by a pitch in the Giants' final spring training game. He was ready to go on Opening Day but has started off just 1-for-13 with six strikeouts at the plate, so it might be fair to say he has never felt quite right. Brandon Crawford had been slated for a day off, but he'll now enter the lineup at shortstop, pushing Mauricio Dubon to center field.

But I read it too late to pull him.  Boo hoo I cried.  Well not really but you know.  Anyway, then:

Mike Yastrzemski hit a pinch-hit, go-ahead homer on Monday in a 3-2 win over the Padres.

Yastrzemski was scratched from the starting lineup due to a sore left hand. He was able to come off the bench, however, and the breakout star from 2020 was able to give the Giants a 3-2 lead with a solo homer off Craig Stammen in the seventh. Yastrzemski is clearly being bothered by the hand injury and has struggled prior to that homer, but should be a quality regular again relatively soon.

Nothing like a homer to make his hand feel better really fast.  (Or me to be glad I was too late to pull him).

Dug into his stats the other night and it looks like pitchers have realized he crushes fastballs and offspeed and struggled with breaking balls last year, so they have shifted pretty dramatically on how they attack him.

  • Last year he got fastballs 61.8%, breaking 25.8% and offspeed 12.5%
  • This year it's fastballs 55.5%, breaking 40.6% and offspeed 3.9%

He's got 0 hits on breaking/offspeed and only 3 hits on fastballs, but they've at least been extra baggers. Pitchers are definitely attacking him differently this year and he needs to make an adjustment quickly.

Mon, Apr 26

Mike Yastrzemski has been diagnosed with a mild left oblique strain.

Advice: The hope is that he can avoid a trip to the injured list, although Giants manager Gabe Kapler indicated the outfielder is likely to miss at least 5-6 games. Still, it's obviously good news for Yastrzemski overall. Darin Ruf is in right field Monday.

Just after it seemed his hand issue had gone away as he'd popped bombs in 2 of 3 games prior to this injury, this pops up, and we all know these 5-6 game absences turn into longer IL stints that can't be backdated. Hopefully this isn't going to be a thing with him, as he's an incredibly productive hitter on the field, but was selected amongst a group of OFers that are all performing well like Franmil Reyes, Myers, Grisham. I'd give him a clean slate whenever he does get back and try to find the hot hand on the wire at the moment as a replacement. Of course this would be easier if they'd just go ahead and put him on IL already...
