Ronald Guzman 2021 Outlook

Recommended Posts

Looks like Ronald Guzman is the likely starting 1b for Texas with some upside. They are also using him in corner outfield this spring Calhoun down. There is a seemingly laundry list of positives to get behind Guzman starting with best shape of his life, new work ethic, new swing, lobotomy, etc.... However, that did come with a EV of 113 this spring which is 3 mph hour increase from the last two seasons which is validating. Drop in the Winter League MVP award and hot spring training and buzz is flowing. The cost is very cheap. Could be another ST cautionary tale or the next Juan Gonzalez....

He was being tried in left field.  Why would he move back to 1st?  Nate Lowe is the future at 1B.

Guzman's defense is considered by most to be better than Lowe's. Taveras, Gallo, and Dahl are the primary outfielders.

Nate also has an option and Guzman doesn’t. If no one got hurt it was reported that Nate was likely headed down since Guzman had been outplaying him in spring. They are gonna see if Guzman is real, and they have time until the hurt guys return.

Isn't it Lowe at DH, Guzman at 1B? They could def send Lowe down to start but the DH options are pretty bad past Lowe.

No, like I have been saying all along, Lowe is the starting 1B.  And confirmed today:

Quote

Rangers manager Chris Woodward told reporters on Saturday that Nate Lowe will be the team's primary first baseman to open the 2021 campaign.

Woodward also said that first baseman Ronald Guzman and righty Josh Sboz have made the team's Opening Day roster. That means it's likely down to Adolis Garcia and Charlie Culberson for the 26th spot on the roster. Lowe, who was acquired from the Rays via trade this offseason, struggled at the plate, hitting .171 across 14 Cactus League games, but still managed to hold onto the starting job. Conversely, Guzman tore the cover off the ball, slashing .306/.390/.611 with three homers in 14 games this spring.

RosterResource has Guzman at DH now. We shall see how things are going when the hurt guys are back. I can see why the Rangers would name Lowe 1B now, for his development and confidence even if Guzman is regarded as the better fielder. Guzman has a long ways to go to secure a spot but still has PT to start.
