Neris still manages to find ways to blow saves after no longer being the closer

Posted Images

Is Estevez gonna take over in COL?

Has Soria taken the job from Crichton in AZ?

Could the Reds be any more difficult to figure out?

Is it Fry or Sulser in BAL? Neither?

Karinchak, Clase, Clase, Karinchak?

How loose is Robles' hold on the job in MIN?

Can Merryweather and Graveman please get healthy soon.

I was wondering if Merryweather would be the closer once (if?) he makes it back...

I’m waiting to find his picture on the back of a milk carton. The last report was he was throwing on flat ground on 5/19. Since then not a peep from anyone. I’m not sure if he had a setback or what. He’s got an injury history that rivals Buxton’s.

Oakland will continue to be what it has all year, Trivino and Diekman (unless they feel they can acquire a true closer cheap before the deadline)…KC is still very random, and will probably be going forward

Not any of the answers I was hoping for.

Robles and Rogers both have 4 total saves. They both have 2 saves over the past week.

Im not sure why anyone would surmise he has any type of “hold on the job.”

MIN appears to be a true committee at this point.

Because I have Robles, and he got the most recent save so he's got a death grip on it.

I know what you mean, but I think in a sense you have to be fine with these co-committees. The old definition of 9th inning closer is out the window. If Robles really had the full time gig, I'd worry he would just lose it b/c Rogers is better. But Rogers being in there for the higher leverage 4 out saves takes pressure off guys like Robles. It's a good situation for those who probably can't hold the job down but are fine being asked to shoulder half of the burden. Just don't expect a full closer's save total, you are rostering "half" a closer and should expect half the saves. I'd pretty much rank the committees based on how I view the stuff of the pitchers in each one; Cleveland's combo looks like the best 1-2 punch in the majors, in terms of overall stuff. Managers just have to accept the timeshare.

I'm always excited to see a new month's closer thread, but feel like I need to gear up before I really get into it.  It's like watching Silence of the Lambs.

Nobody knows.  My guess is shared save opportunities with Mac Cheez.

Since the month always starts out slowly, I'll pose a strategic question with regards to closers: Who is actively trying to cash some chips in on the trade market? With so many temporary situations, there are certainly managers starved for a steadier option. Depending on your position in the standings and the league, this is a good time to shop some closers-especially the ones like Kennedy and Rodriguez who are likely to be traded, but have performed well enough that they can return some kind of value. There are a few others who come to mind, but I'm curious if anyone is testing the waters, or trying to acquire help via trade? I feel like I'm opening the floodgates for team specific comments, but even just to know "I traded X for Aroldis Chapman a week ago" would be interesting.

Karinchak struggling the last 3 of 4 outings. Thoughts on CLE closer situation?

I think it's fluid. I'm fortunate enough play in a saves + holds league where I own both so it doesn't really matter. I could see them both finishing with 15 -20 saves, but I expect Karinchak to have the better overall numbers by quite a bit.

Clase is 100% the guy now.

This is 100% not true and 100% not substantiated by any actual facts.

They’ll both get several saves this month and this thread will go back and forth declaring that one or the other is 100% definitively the closer forever period.

Karinchak  was absolutely awful again. Abreu bailed him out on a weak ground ball 2-0 count. It was surprising Francona left him in so long. I have no idea what this means going forward.

Clase was probably unavailable after working two straight. If there’s a save opportunity tomorrow it’ll likely go to him. After that, who knows?
